We all know how important it is to stay fit and healthy in our lives. Fitness is an aspect that has become very common these days, especially among youngsters. We look up to many personalities when it comes to fitness and one such figure is Virat Kohli.

When Virat first came into the international arena in 2008, when he led India to victory in the U-19 World Cup, he was a chubby lad back then. Today, he is one of the fittest athletes and a fitness icon. He is compared to some of the greats from various sports, like Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael Nadal in terms of fitness. He is as quick as a cheetah when it comes to running between the wickets and always energetic on the field. What led to the transformation of that young chubby lad to one of the fittest athletes today? Let’s find out!
For those of you who don’t know, Virat loves home-cooked food and describes himself as a foodie, but a foodie who refrains from junk food. A sneak peek into his diet will tell you that he prefers food rich in protein as it helps in bodybuilding. His diet consists of Salmon, sushi and lamb chops. Soups, salads and lightly sauteèed vegetables are his favorites. He also believes it is very important to always stay hydrated.
Virat is a gym regular. He follows a 5-day workout and 2-day rest plan. His workout and fitness routine consists of a combination of weights and cardio exercises as it helps not only in gaining lean and strong muscles but also good body strength, stamina and toning lower body muscles. He is also away from smoking and drinking habits for better immunity, stamina and always remains focused during workouts.
Some of the secrets to staying healthy and fit that he believes in are:
- Exercise daily. Play some sport and always be physically active. – Avoid junk food as much as possible.
- Consume more organic and healthier food.
- The intake of carbs from good sources is a must. Includes soups, salads, lightly sauteèed vegetables.
- You should know your limits while eating delicacies.
- Focus on building stamina, body strength while exercising.
- Do not drink or smoke as it reduces body immunity.
“During the off-season period, it is all about working on building muscle mass. The workouts require much more work. I concentrate mainly on my lower body and strengthening my legs and back, which are required for my sport. I focus on functional exercises that my sport requires rather than the ones that make my body look good. During the season, I mainly focus on maintaining and building my fitness and stamina levels,” Virat says.
He adds, “When I am traveling, these three exercises are my basic routine. My closest alternatives to them are looking for a mix-and-match of equipment to resemble my daily workout. If there is a barbell or any lifting plates available, then I am sorted for my lifting set. In the absence of a treadmill, I enjoy doing cross-country runs and love a good cycle ride in whichever city I am.”
Virat is at the top today and a large credit to his success goes to the effort he puts into being fit and healthy. His focus, commitment, and hard work when it comes to fitness is something for all of us to learn and implement in our lives. This man not only inspires us by his game, but also by the importance he gives to staying fit and healthy.
